A 2026 intern at Glide Japan, Shobhit shares his reflections and experiences from the final day of his internship.

The Karatsu Tour and Sushi Making by Glide Japan is an experience I will not forget that easily. The sushi making experience was conducted at the instructor’s house, where we were greeted by two cute little dogs. The environment felt very personal, homely and serene. Since the house was located in the countryside outside of Karatsu, I could really sense a rural Japanese vibe.

Our instructor was very patient and polite when teaching us the steps of sushi making, unlike most restaurant chefs (so he told us when talking about his experience working in a sushi restaurant in Ireland). During the process, he didn’t just give out instructions; he also tried to make connections by really opening up, which elevated the overall experience.

At the end our delicious sushi was prepared successfully. I’m glad with the end result as my dish also tasted amazing, thanks to the genius instructor.
We also got to experience Karatsu City, although we visited on a Wednesday, so there weren’t many shops open. Despite that, the guide made sure our experience wasn’t ruined. We first went to the Hikiyama Museum and saw the gigantic festival floats, and got to know about the traditional festival of Karatsu Kunchi.

We also saw the Old Karatsu Bank, which we were informed was built by the same architect who built Tokyo Station. Our guide made sure to inform us about these, by sharing short snippets of interesting information from time to time.

The city was calm, with not many tall buildings, but not too rural either. From tempting bakeries and elegant souvenir shops to the serene Karatsu Bay, the city had everything a tourist could ask for. I look forward to visiting again when time allows.
