Situated just north of Okinawa, Yoron Island (与論島) is a small, picturesque island spanning 20km, with a population of just 5,000. Reachable by ferry from Okinawa’s Motobu Port in about 2.5 hours, Yoron boasts both lush beaches and friendly locals, making it a perfect getaway from busy cities for those who want to enjoy real island life.
Must-knows before you visit Yoron Island
① The Best Beaches: Crystal Clear Waters & ‘Star Sand’
Yoron has simply some of the most beautiful beaches you'll ever see. The coral reefs surrounding the island help keep the water clean and vibrant, making it incredibly clear - so clear, in fact, that sea turtles can even be spotted swimming nearby!
One of the island’s most unique features is its ‘star sand’ - tiny grains of sand that are naturally shaped like stars, found on some of the island's beaches.
You can also enjoy lots of marine activities, such as snorkelling, banana-boat rides, and even try your hand (or feet, rather!) at stand-up paddleboarding (SUP).

② Cultural Activities: Kusaki-zome & the Amami Trail
Beyond the beaches, Yoron offers authentic cultural experiences that connect you with both nature and tradition.
Kusaki-zome (plant dyeing) is a traditional way of dyeing cloth using plants, leaves, and flowers. It's a fun, relaxing experience that's definitely worth trying.
If you’re into hiking, definitely check out the Amami Trail. A long trail that connects several of the islands in the Amami area (including Yoron), the trail offers lush, green forest views and nature galore.

③ Meet Locals: Food, Drinks & Friendly People
Don't miss going to a local izakaya (Japanese pub) and try some of the island’s fresh food and drinks. The people in Yoron are known for being very friendly and love talking with visitors! Beyond socialising, this is a great way to learn about the island!
