What visitors to Beppu sometimes get wrong

(and ideas on how to improve your trip)

Visitors to Beppu might occasionally misunderstand or overlook certain aspects of the city due to cultural differences or unfamiliarity with local customs.

To help make the most of your trip, here are a few things that you might like to keep in mind when visiting Beppu:

Onsen Etiquette: Beppu is famous for its hot springs (onsen), and while many tourists are excited to experience them, some might not be aware of the proper onsen etiquette.

It’s important to follow the bathing rituals, such as washing thoroughly before entering the bath, not allowing towels to touch the water, and respecting sex segregation.

Tattoo Policies: some traditional onsen establishments have strict policies against tattoos due to their historical association with organised crime. Whilst attitudes are changing, some places might still refuse entry to individuals with visible tattoos. It’s a good idea to research onsen that are tattoo-friendly before visiting.

Expectations for Language: while Beppu is a popular tourist destination, not all locals are fluent in English. Some visitors might assume that English is widely spoken, but having a few basic Japanese phrases or using translation apps can enhance communication and show respect for the local culture.

Local Customs and Manners: visitors might not be familiar with Japanese customs and manners, such as bowing, removing shoes when entering certain places, and speaking in a quiet and respectful manner. Taking a little time to learn about Japanese etiquette can help you navigate social situations more comfortably.

Dress Code: Beppu is a fairly relaxed and casual city, but there are still certain places, such as upscale restaurants, where a slightly more formal dress code is expected. Visitors should be prepared with appropriate attire for different occasions.

Underestimating Travel Time: Beppu is known for its geothermal attractions, and some of these visits will be spread quite far apart. Visitors should consider the time it takes to travel between different hot spring sites or other points of interest and make the most of their time (we can help with planning here).

Geothermal Hazards: Beppu’s geothermal activity is fascinating, but visitors should be cautious around areas with steam vents and boiling water. Ignoring warning signs or venturing off designated paths can be dangerous.

Assuming Everything is Open: like many places, Beppu can experience seasonal or occasional closures of attractions, especially when maintenance or renovations are taking place (onsen facilities require constant care and attention). It’s a good idea to check operating hours and any temporary closures for must-visit locations before your visit.

Cultural Sensitivity: visitors can sometimes unintentionally overlook the importance of cultural sensitivity. Being respectful of local customs, traditions, and religious practices is crucial for a positive experience and meaningful interactions with locals.

Remember that while these points highlight some misconceptions, Beppu is a welcoming and hospitable city with friendly locals. Taking the time to learn about the local culture and being open to new experiences will enhance your visit and leave you with great memories.
