An intern at Glide Japan in 2026, Shun and the other interns revamped the usual Minami Beppu walking route, showing us a new way to explore Minami Beppu.
Minami Beppu is a quiet area that offers a different side of the city, especially for first-time visitors. I was surprised by how many interesting places are gathered here, like cozy cafes, local restaurants, artist accommodation and unique gift shops - all within a short walking distance.
Exploring the area is very easy with the Minami Beppu walking map. By scanning a QR code, you can check locations, reviews, and directions on your phone. Most places are only 6–7 minutes apart, making it perfect for a relaxed walk.
One of the most memorable stops was Kiyoshima Apartment. From the outside, it looks simple, and the inside is a little dark, but it is filled with creativity. Many artists live and work here, and seeing their rooms and artwork was truly inspiring.
We also visited Spica, a warm and stylish gift shop. The welcoming staff introduced us to beautifully made items such as clasp totes, patchwork clasps, jewelry, bags, and purses. Spica also holds exhibitions, adding to its artistic atmosphere. You can find their works on Instagram at @spica_beppu.
For a sweet break, Aramaki Shoten is a must-visit. This Japanese sweet shop is popular with locals, and the chocolate dorayaki is especially recommended. Nearby, there is a small playground where we enjoyed our snack in a peaceful and quiet setting.
While walking, we noticed locals lining up at Tomonaga Bakery, which is said to be very popular. However, since many shops close early, it is best to check opening hours in advance.
To end the day, Space Beppu is the perfect place to relax. This welcoming community space offers books, drinks, local gifts, and meaningful events. We also joined an ikebana event and it was so much fun and meaningful. You can also get the Minami Beppu walking map there. Minami Beppu is calm, creative, and full of small discoveries. It is an ideal area for travelers who want to experience local life at a slow and comfortable pace.
