A Glide Japan intern from the 2024 batch and now a staff member, Audreay was among the first participants of the Bamboo Lantern Workshop. Since then, she has been instructing the workshop, witnessing its growth into one of Space Beppu’s most popular activities within just a year of its launch.

Bamboo and Beppu
Besides being an onsen town, bamboo is also a significant part of Beppu’s heritage. In the past, before plastic products became mainstream, bamboo-made items were essential in daily life. A shift in bamboo production occurred when Japan’s economy began rising during the 1950s. As a result, bamboo craftsmanship transitioned from everyday utility products to fine arts, while cheaper plastic alternatives replaced traditional bamboo goods. Today, the bamboo used for the Bamboo Lantern Workshop comes from waste material sourced from Beppu’s last remaining bamboo factory—Nagai Seichiku.

Bamboo has long been a vital part of Japanese culture, used in everything from architecture to traditional crafts. A Step-by-Step Creative Journey
The workshop begins with a brief introduction to the significance of bamboo in Japan. Participants then select their bamboo piece and sketch their desired design or choose from a variety of template patterns. With precision tools provided, they carefully drill intricate patterns, allowing light to shine through the delicate cutouts. Once completed, the lanterns can be illuminated with tea lights or light bulbs, bringing each design to life with a warm, gentle glow.
